last year, i was working a full time job and doing photography “a la carte”
when i went to dallas last October, i sat at the Chili’s Too in Dallas Love Field Airport and furiously scribbled on a napkin that i was going to go into “full-time” business for myself on Septemer 24, 2008. This would be my birthday gift to myself.
In February, i unexpectedly lost my job. I came home. Was a wee bit stressed. And stared at my computer – blinking slowly and trying to shake myself out of a trance.
then Fred im’ed me – most likely to recommend new music to me – and i said “i lost my job today”
and he said “great! now you can stop making excuses” And i will never forget that. What happened next, i was not prepared for. I saw my business TAKE OFF. i have been shooting just about every day since the middle of march.
I recently went back and tallied up all of my sessions and thought i would share the numbers with you.
in 2008, i have photographed:
147 Sessions, (yes… that is CORRECT, one hundred-forty-seven!!!), 18 Weddings, 3 NILMDTS Cases, 1 Fundraiser, 1 MMA Fight, 10 Plays for the Amarillo Little Theatre
and i traveled 19 times this year! including my trip to Mexico for a wedding!there were certainly times when i thought i was going insane. when i felt extremely overwhelmed. when i thought maybe i just wanted to apply for medical school after all. yet, times when my clients made me completely appreciate my life and career. i have learned many a lesson the HARD way.
but as my dry erase board read for most of this year, “You are blessed to be this stressed”
and i truly was. 2009 is a year of change for me in many aspects. i’m both excited and anxious to see what i can learn this year! I am excited to be meeting and working with a lot of new clients and to be given the opportunity to work with several returning clients. you are why i keep doing what i do. and i appreciate the warmth, patience, understanding, appreciation, and respect that you have given to me over the course of the last year!
i am thankful for the opportunity to work with local non profit organizations, for all the friendships i have made with my clients, for the cake and cookies you have so lovingly sent and shared with me, for the many children that have hugged my neck or kissed my camera lens, for the couples who trusted me and welcomed me into their families and wedding memories, and for my friends who stood by my side and watched me grow, strengthen, stress, crumble, and offered a helping hand on the way up! for other local photographers who have formed a special friendship and bond with me on purpose! and for the photographers in other cities and states who i have worked with and for. and for the adorable little boy that keeps me grounded, motivated, and determined to push up and through. i love you all!
you made my 2008 not only possible, but enjoyable.
cheers to 2009!
