Merry Christmas | from our faces to yours!

While on vacation in Dallas,

laken and i met up with Andie Smith

she is an excellent photographer

and i have had the pleasure of knowing her for a while  now

she has helped me so much in the way of designs, templates and even comes and shoots with me on occasion!

at any rate, she came out with us for the afternoon and shot a few photos of us

because, as any mom knows, photos of HER with her children are often few and far between

my personal favorite:

he’s cute

Chriselda0001andie: i can never thank you enough for giving me these photos of us. it’s not often that i have a photo taken of us because i’m always behind the camera. you have NO idea how thankful i am. how i was reduced to tears when looking at all of them. it was nice to step back for the day and just have our photos taken. to not worry about posing. or editing. or anything!!! i can never thank you enough for giving me an afternoon of memories with my son that i can suspend in time forever. i love you tremendously and am blessed to have you as a friend…. (and snack companion!!!)

Mexico | Mexico City

beyond the comfort zone. beyond familiarity. discovering new lands. new existence. new peace of mind. many a tear was shed in Mexico City. a sense of humility. appreciation. reflection.

it may sound flowery. it might sound overly romantic. but i guarantee you that i left there feeling much better about everything. left Mexico City really grasping an understanding of some of the darker areas of life. left Mexico City completely aware of the life being granted to us on a daily basis. in awe of how easily it is to side step. or take the shortcut. rather than go THROUGH.

enamored by the sense of being among my culture. blindly trusting the good nature in man. relying on spirit to guide you. expecting that the river bend just carry you on through.

and Mexico… you did not fail me

no fear. without question. we walked the city. relied on public transportation. befriended souls. left life happen. let life happen. and watched it too.

MEX0122 copyMEX0129 copyMEX0098 copy

common to see people selling papers, fruits, nuts, toys, and gum on the streets.this is their INCOME. it’s not selling something to the tourists. people come out and wash your windshield. for money. and they do this all day. they are on the street selling cheap, useless items… bottled water. trying to make a living. the children do it. it breaks my heart. piece by piece i fall apart in knowing that they don’t know the life we do. yet, all the while, i acknowledge their resilient spirit.MEX0324 copyMEX0422 copy

common housing

MEX0426 copyMEX0497 copypublic restrooms are not free. we paid almost $1 USD several times to use the restroom.

09MEX409 copyMEX0364 copy09MEX414 copythe major highlight of the trip was our trip to Xochimilco. my photos could never do it justice. we rented a boat for an hour and just sat there listening to a man paddle us about the river. boats coming up to offer us food, drinks, music, and blankets. its no stretch to say that i felt a complete peace of mind there. so distant from where we were the rest of the trip. delicately enclosed by avocado trees. palm trees. and the perfectly crisp air. and the sound of the water. just swooshing.

MEX0254 copyMEX0242 copyMEX0326 copyour final day of the trip we went to Teotihuacan. i stood at the edge and just bawled. i studied Egyption history when i was younger. to see an actual pyramid in life, was nothing short of majestic. i cannot find the words to accurately describe, explain, or emit what i felt standing there in the sun looking out toward the pyramids. my mind was paralyzed and i lacked the capability to photograph. for that, i will not apologize. i’m happy to have just relished in that moment.

MEX0479 copyour dinner that evening consisted of Consomme, pork skins, and cactus. i’m surprised by the way so many people run businesses in their homes. we ate in a restaurant that required that we walk through someone’s personal kitchen. as we walked through, several of them were sitting at the table laughing and talking. i snapped this on the way out.

MEX0459 copyMEX0435 copyMEX0467 copysurreal. it is so different from my home. from my life here. i am ever so thankful to have the opportunity to go back to Mexico. to have created these memories. i will never forget this trip. nor do i take it lightly. this is the ONE thing that i have done in my life that has had this much value. and worth. eternally at peace. with these moments.

Kristi S - Lovely photos, C. This brought back many memories of my trips to La Ciudad de Mexico! Aren’t the floating gardens and pyramids cool??

sprinkles. it’s all in the sprinkles of life

i was joking the other day about christmas

and how i didn’t understand how people get so flustered

and rushed

because christmas is the SAME TIME EVERY YEAR

there shouldn’t be such a thing as “christmas sneaking up” on anyone!

before my laughter had even subsided, i hear the words,

“can you believe it’s Friday?!”

my laughter probably stopped dead in it’s tracks

and i said “WHAT?!”

yes sir… Christmas has snuck up on me

(sidenote: is “snuck” a word? or is it “sneaked” ?? i should know this, i was an english major for some time in college)

Well, now that you know that christmas is, in fact, fast approaching

and that i have done nothing in terms of preparation. no shopping. no wrapping of gifts

my tree has been up since Halloween – or quite possibly still up from last christmas (you’ll never really know, will you???)

but that is about it.

I have spent much of the last two months in travel

we recently returned from mexico and then had a quick trip out to san antonio

both were relaxing and quite enjoyable

during this time, we have also had bad news delivered to some of our family members regarding their health

i’ve seen my friends lose their loved ones

or cope with illness

i’m not sure where i heard this … Facebook? Twitter?

but it is the whole purpose of this post…

“Don’t focus so much on the URGENT that you forget what’s IMPORTANT”

the whole purpose of this post …

is to remind all of you to take a step back from the holiday craziness

and re-evaluate what the “spirit” of christmas is all about

soak up those moments of baking with your grandmother

or putting together a questionable Gingerbread house with your kids

shift your focus from the urgency to shop, mail out cards, wrap gifts…

and focus on what is REALLY important

and that is the life you were given

and are blessed with daily

*****************************************

while in Mexico City, Laken and i spent much time just being silly

i love that my little boy is such a goober and so full of life and makes no apologies for it

nor do i ask him to

as we ate breakfast on our hotel bed,

i looked up to see him eating ONLY the sprinkles off of his donut

when asked why he wasn’t eating the rest, he replied:

“because i just like the sprinkles”

i aspire to be more like my son

LAKENMEXwe just returned from San Antonio

there are PLENTY of new blog posts to feast your eyes upon!

those shall return this week!!!

but until then…

enjoy the sprinkles in your life!!!!

Briana - I just wrote a post on my blog on a similar theme. It’s crazy how life seems to get in the way, and suddenly something so wonderful as Christmas seems like an inconvenience.

You’re boy is beautiful, and I admire his sprinkle philosophy. We lost a family member this weekend, and another is severely ill, and I’ve let that depress me when I should turn it into a lesson to value my family moments and let myself truly enjoy them. Your family is in my prayers.

Merry Christmas!

Courtney Henry - Such fun!!!!

John & Mayra | married

john and mayra have been friends of mine for several years now

i first met mayra while in college

we were both Nannies for a family in San Antonio, TX

she is really quiet and shy

and i don’t think i liked her very much

in fact, she was eating an apple in a rocking chair when i decided that i didn’t like her

then one day, we were pushing the kids on the swings

and discovered that our common denominator was photography

we were both taking photography courses

and the rest… is history

When Mayra called me and said she was engaged,

i squealed with delight!

i’m so happy for my two friends

happy they have started their lives together

as soon as i got there… we photographed their engagement photos

here are a few of the favorites:

Kristi S - Gorgeous, especially the bride!

the davis clan | family

you know… i am incredibly blessed to have clients who come to me more than once a year for photos

i feel very honored and humbled to record memories for people year round

the Davis family is one of the families that brightens my “career”

i can be in a poor mood and then head to their session and be instantly cheerful

not really sure what it is

maybe Owen’s expressions? or his fake laugh?

or the fact that Megan always has something sweet and fattening waiting for me…

whatever it is… they’re one of my favorite families to photograph
